Set during the chaos of the next Cultural Revolution, SISTER 121
is the frightening story of a government-controlled house for abused, disfigured
and unmarried women. When these women are suddenly ordered to guard the political
prisoner Gladys Amelia Slaughter, daughter of one of the most prominent leaders
of the opposition, they are forced to confront the bloody truth about their crumbling
society. This play was inspired by actual events during the Chinese Cultural Revolution
of the 1960s. The production is directed by Jeremy Menekseoglu and John Reents
and will feature Rebecca Lincoln, Anna Weiler, Teresa Ro, Kyle Carroll and Jeremy
Menekseoglu.
Dream Theatre Company: From its inspired beginnings in 1998 at
the famed Moscow Art Theatre, Dream Theatre Company has produced works in Russia,
New York, and throughout the United States. From Moscow to Manhattan, Dream Theatre
members have produced powerful, vivid, and sometimes frightening works. This past
November Dream Theatre presented to Chicago the two original one-act plays ANNA,
IN THE DARKNESS and THE HAPPINESS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA,
showing that from daring comedies and farce to the dark corners of the human condition,
Dream Theatre is committed to breaking down the barriers between actor and audience,
reviving a long-forgotten theatrical tradition. No longer is the audience merely
spectators, but instead they are actively invited into the dream world of the
play where possibilities are endless and the fourth wall no longer exists. SISTER
121 continues this exciting tradition.
